Sleeping pills are used for the treatment of insomnia. Insomnia occurs in more than 50% of the population at some time. It tends to occur more frequently with advancing age and is more prevalent in women than in men.

Insomnia is the inability to obtain sleep of sufficient length or quality to produce refreshment upon awaking. It can manifest as difficulty falling asleep, difficulty remaining asleep, early morning awakening, or sleep that is not restorative.

Continued insomnia results in reduced productivity, increased risk of accidents, decreased productive behavior and increased risk of excessive alcohol (or other depressant) use. (Use of alcohol to induce sleep is counterproductive because even though it may induce sleep, it interferes with the stages of deep sleep that are important for refreshment and regenerative processes).

AMBIEN: ZOLPIDEM TARTRATE

Zolpidem is in a class of drugs called sedative / hypnotics or sleep medications. Zolpidem affects chemicals in your brain that may become unbalanced and cause insomnia. Zolpidem induces sleep and causes relaxation. It is used to treat sleep disorders such as trouble falling asleep, waking up many times during the night, or waking up too early in the morning. Zolpidem is for short-term use only--usually 7 to 10 days. Longer-term use must be monitored closely by a doctor. Zolpidem may also be used for purposes other than those listed in this medication guide.
